E is for edit

I've had a little problem coming up with an e post this week because I've been busy for days trying to edit our file cabinet.

I try to be  organized but sometimes I feel I'm always going up-hill.

I have eagerly, in earnest, being eagle-eyed determined to edit the mounds and years of records. Hopefully I will become more efficient so when I need a copy of an item I can find it strait away.

In researchI I  found out that bank statements and  bills only need to be kept for one year. I've been keeping more so I have shredded quite a bit. I have 5 bags of shredding for pickup this week.

I want to go from this:

To this:

I've decided to keep all of our income tax returns--I feel like something could come up later.

Also I'm weeding out household items, donating items, throwing some things out that I will never use. It makes life less cluttered.

How do you all handle all of the paperwork?

I need to take a page from your book! As a teacher I am overwhelmed with mounds of paper from every source. Your files look immaculate!

I was editing file cabinets last week. I had tax papers from April still under my desk, which I didn't reveal to the Husband. It's great seeing the floor again.

I have binders instead of a filing cabinet and find it much easier. I keep household bills in one, banking in another, medical in another, etc. And I only keep bills for one year, so each month when I put in the current paid bill, I chuck out the one from the previous year. Hope this helps.

I'm a pack rat, so I keep much more than I need. However, every couple of years I do like to cull through my mounds of papers too. Blessings!

DEFINITELY keep your income taxes. They say 3 years, I've kept ours for 10. But when we were cleaning out my (now late) mother's shed in 2007, we found receipts from 1983!

I'm a shredder...sometimes too quickly! I imagine it feels good right now being so organized with your paperwork! Good job!

Oh dear, I've missed a few of your posts and they are such great ones, each ringing true in my world. I, too, try to be organized, and even with word processing, seem to have ridiculously high stacks of paper about. I'll think of you the next time i take a stab at organizing my files :)
