Bound

Bound for her second trip of missionary work. Sophie is headed for Guatemala, we have a large team going,  ministering, providing health care needs and building.

Here we are seeing her off at 4:00 a.m.

I am so excited to hear about all of the outreach to the people there. The trip is just one week but that can make a great impact to the lives of so many.

Age

Kicking off the new round with A is for Age.  You know it's just a number and we can really do what ever our bodies will allow us.

I'm thinking of my Mom who is a nonagenarian (90 and above). She is 91 and still gets up everyday and applies all her makeup, gets dressed as sharp as can be and goes as much as she possibly can.

Here she is last week at our annual family reunion telling her nephew just how it is. She was the oldest person there!

Here's all of her girls and her. I'm the one fully standing.

Seeing Y's

Traveling across the Kansas plains you see plenty Y's in the form of Wind turbines.  There are more than 52,000 of them across 41 states.

Kansas ranks 5th in wind production alongside also being  known as the Wheat State and Sunflower State.

I caught these from our car, Ynot take some shots!!!

The biggest wind project was completed in 2017 outside Dodge City Kansas. It has 122 turbines. To give you an idea if you haven't seen them in person, the blades are 173 feet long and the towers are 262 feet high.

I really enjoy seeing the size difference up against the farm machinery.

These beautiful perennials come back in vivid color every spring, think I need to purchase more.

Utilize

In this day of shopping on the net and just buying everything new that you think you need, take a step back.

Utilize what you have and find a practical use for it--definition of utilize.

I'm an old soul and I keep history alive in everything I can.

I took an old side leg to a vintage sewing machine and made a side border for one of my gardens.

Need a light for the deck table at night. Take a 1.00 clay pot, turn upside down and put a 1.00 garden light in the hole. Works fantastic.

Want a new lamp to match the new chair, use the old lamp-buy and new shade and glue on a pretty trim that matches your new fabric.

Keeping up with everyone is a big task and and as soon  as you buy what they have, they have taken out a new credit card and are buying more.

Teddy Bear

Funny how things get switched around as we get older, we took care of our children so much and now they are beginning to do the same for us.

Our grands like to give stuffed animals to Papaw nowadays.  When our oldest grand was in San Francisco a few weeks ago she bought this bear for Papaw. Usually its the parents bringing them back to little ones.

Isn't that a good message.

This little duo from our grandchildren sits on the monitor reminding us everyday.

I don't think you get too old to enjoy little softies!!

Quarry

Finding a Q word is always a challenge.  Did some looking on wiki and decided on quarry. I know there are several quarries here in Kansas and many throughout our country.

This image really caught my eye "Rock of Ages" quarry in Vermont. Rock of Ages quarry is the  largest deep hole destination granite quarry. It is 600 feet deep and the water a milky blue.

Another quarry in Mt. Airy, North Carolina is the size of 66 football fields.

Pakistan is know for it onyx stone quarries and Spain for it's marble.

This stone was carved at Rock of Ages quarry, such expertise.

We Americans do love those marble and granite kitchen counter tops--most new homes come with such luxuries.

Little Orphant Annie

I spent a wonderful trip last week with my sister in Indianapolis. We both agree it was a buying trip because most everything we did was shop!!!

Both of us love a good find and both interested in history.

I've always loved "Little Orphan Annie" but learned so much from finding this book in a vintage store.  "Orphant Annie Story Book".

The Orphant Annie Storybook was written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle, the creator of Raggedy Ann as a tribute and memorial to his friend and neighbor James Whitcomb Riley.


The original poem "Little Orphant Annie" was written in 1885 by James Whitcomb Riley. The poem about  a little orphan who comes to live with a family.  It was inspired by Mary Alice Smith an actual orphan who came to live with his family during her childhood.

In 1908 the first book "Little Orphant Annie was printed. During the years following she became the inspiration for "Little Orphan Annie" and "Raggedy Ann".

A film adaptation was made in 1918, a silent film which was narrated by James Riley.

Another adaptation is the comic strip created in 1924. The long running Broadway musical was made in 1977 and motion picture in 1982.

While on my trip my Sister had these stored away and she gave me this set of Little Orphan Annie characters.

Daddy Warbucks, Annie, Mrs. Hannigan and Molly. The Nickerbocker Toy Company created these in the 1980's.

Both James Riley and Johnny Gruelle passed away before they knew what a legend Little Orphant Annie would become to future generations.

KEYS, yes she's got them. Our first grandchild with their own car!!! Feeling pretty KEEN she took her car to youth service. Looks like a stop by the park for a KODAK moment.

This car was mine but now I have purchased a new car too. Enjoying the new phase of grandparenthood, I am not the official pick-up driver!!!

Who says the Olympics Winter games have all the good skaters?  I happened on this group from the U.S.A. warming up for their performances!!

Still having winter weather here, snowed today but weekend will be warm!!

Heros

Once a year our church takes one evening and honors all of the volunteer workers who do amazing jobs.

This year they took a spin and many dressed up as classic movie and comic book hero's.

Our hero's include volunteers from several categories being choir members, ushers, life group leaders, bible study leaders, coffee shop organizers, servers--the list could include many other helpers.

Lots of fun ensued.

Green Grass

Well the only green grass I have here is from the package I purchased at JoAnn's fabrics yesterday!! I created a little vignette on one of the tiers on a kitchen tray. It does brighten the space up.

Today in the past twelve hours we have had rain, sleet, freezing rain, lightning, thunder and hail!!!! That can be Kansas in the winter.

Our temps are in the 30's so I don't see it getting better for a few days, until then I'll just enjoy my grass in the kitchen.
