G is for Genealogy

ABC Wednesday - G is for GENEALOGY

One of my favorite activities is researching our families GENEALOGY I have spent several years working on my paternal and maternal lineage and my husbands also.

I have found information from old family bible records found on a website with birth, marriage and death dates.  I have discovered  cousins and shared pictures of our great-grandfathers who were brothers.

My Father wrote a journal when he found out he was ill and gave me so much information that he had heard of just from word of mouth that I was able to research from. He named small towns and counties which really helped in my research.

It's so fun to find out you were named after a great-great grandmother or grandfather.

I have discovered one of our lineage family crests and information on how the spelling of my maiden name was changed over the years.

I have discovered I am related to Katherine Hepburn (6th cousin) and Thomas Jefferson to name a few.

Below is  a picture of my husbands Great-Grandfather in the civil war.  My MIL was given his civil war buttons from his uniform and she gave them to me.

He was shot in the shoulder and receieved a pension.  He was awarded $8.00 per month and tried to get it increased for years because it totally disabled him but never accomplished that.

Wow, $8 a month is not enough considering what he had been through. The buttons would be a great treasure fore generations to come.

You are very lucky your father wrote all this information down for you - my father did not really know his family history and so often made up facts - and changed them several times - so that we have no idea which bits are true or fiction!

I find genealogy very interesting too. Whenever I have time I peep into ancestry.com and wonder where to begin.

How nice to have the buttons in your hand and know someone else held and wore them before you.

Genealogy is so interesting and the buttons are great treasure! I visited also your other blog and you have done great work. I've been building my family tree on myheritage.com and also on ancestry.com. My grandfather and six of his siblings emigrated to USA, my grandfather came back the others stayed there. I've been searching their information from ancestry.com and I found them.
