M is for Marv

Out driving to get a soft drink today I passed this place I've been by many times in my neighborhood.

Marv's is local owned barbershop, I really don't see many of them nowadays.  The parking lot was full. On the porch sat two rocking chairs - midwest flair.

I really thought the pole signified the patriotism of the U.S.A. but after researching on WIKI I was really mistaken.

In the middle ages the poles were erected outside the Barbers office but the barber performed bloodletting--hence the red color.  The white designated bandages use.  Gruesome I think.

Blue was added later but the reason is not known, perhaps a homage to the U.S.A. Well Marv is really a patriot, he flies his American, POW and Honor our Troops flags with pride.

You got me curious so I went to find out why the blue. I learned that the barber pole is red and white in Europe, while it has the blue in our country. One source said that the blue may represent the veins and the red, the arteries. I could see blue being added somewhere during some war time and barbers wanted to prove they were true Americans.

Here in Auckland, we still have the barber pole. The ones that twirl round and round.

We have several old fashioned barber shops in our small town. In the big city it's usually chain shops that cater to men, women and children. A year ago my husband quit going to get his hair cut and asked me to do it. I was afraid at first, but with a nice pair of hair clippers and his curly hair it has worked out well. - Margy
