During WWII he served with a group of around 400 other Navajo's who signaled soldiers in the field with a secret code. They radioed over 800 messages using Navajo language The code was NEVER deciphered by the enemy. He enlisted in 1943 and was discharged in 1945. He received a congregational silver medal of honor.
Major Howard Conner, signal officer said in November 6, 2008 "If were not the Navajo's the marines would have never taken Iwo Jima".
He is one of my hero's for sure--proud of his service.

What a marvelous history behind the code talkers. One of my favorite bosses was a lady named Bessie Smith. She was a full blooded Navajo and she had a very unique speech pattern. She told me she learned to speak English at age 8. She was a real kind heart. Nice memories.
It is quite a shame how many do not understand or know our history. This gentleman was a true American hero. Thank you for sharing Ann. HUGS
