Vintage Thingie Thursday April 1, 2010

Happy April Fool's Day..... No kidding.   Suzanne @http://coloradolady.blogspot.com/ is hosting todays party. Unique things are always showing up.  Check it out.

Laundry Day of Yesteryear.  This is a picture of one of my Grandmother Jewell's laundry baskets.   Many times we went to her house and she had this sitting on the lawn and she was hanging out clothes on her clothes line. I purchased this from her estate sale.

I use this basket now to sort clothes.  I love seeing the bright red flowers in the plastic lining.
My husbands Mom gave me the next two laundry bags.  The bag had a note on it that said  it was made in 1900. I took a second picture of it- if you look real close you can see the word "Collars" emboidered on it.

My mother-in-law could not remember where the next one came from but it is really interesting.  It looks like it was a laundry bag or organizaional bag for baby clothes or powder etc. It has 4 individual sections.

Don't you really appreciate all of our modern conveniences, can you imagine using a wringer washer now (which my Mom had when I was little) or having to hang up all your clothes on the clothesline outside.
But you know those clothes that did hang outside had the most wonderful smell!!!! Hope you enjoyed my trip down vintage laundry land.

Some of my neighbors still like hanging their clothes outside. I never did it myself. I remember my grandmother had bushel baskets, but I can't remember if she used them for laundry.

These bring back sweet memories of watching my grandma do laundry. She had a basket like that (and a wringer washer, and hung everything outside). That embroidered bag is really interesting.

It is amazing that basket has held up, I would be afraid to use it! I just love that, and it would look so cute in a laundry room, I have a basket like that, but no liner...I think mine is a fruit basket however! Have a great VTT and what a really neat post today!

I've never seen a laundry basket like this. The bags are very unusual. I learned a lot today. Thanks for sharing!

I just love all things for the laundry that are vintage. I started to collect them last year to decorate my laundry room. It does remind us of simpler times but were they really? : ) Beautiful basket!
Happy Easter,

Ann, I really enjoyed seeing your VTT laundry basket and bags. I hang out clothes and use a vintage cart on wheels I found at an antique shop. Just like my Mama used to have. I had to make a new lining, but other than that it works perfect. I love fresh wind blown sheets, don't you?

I definitely enjoy all the modern conveniences, but must admit the cheerful fabric lining your grandmother's laundry basket reminds me that every thing has a cost. Nothing in my laundry repertoire can compete with that.

My mom had laundry baskets like that, too! No Rubbermaid back then! I like that redwork!

One of my mom's favorite things to do is hang clothes out on the clothes line. They always smell so fresh and light...
