The definition of homespun is something rough or loosely woven fabric originally made at home with yarn spun at home. The textile usually had a rough surface.
Usually the lettering if on the object would be "folksy humor" or "cracker barrel philosophy" that was a new one for me.
This "collar bag" was made by my husbands great-great grandmother around 1916. My MIL gave it to me years ago. Can you imagine having a special bag just for collars? My MIL always told me it was lady like to wear a collar on your blouse or dress.
This is the original string.
This lettering is so intricate and I'm sure done by hand.
Cracker Barrel Philosophy per Dictionary.com is: something plain, simple and unsophisticated. The term has it's origins from the late 19th century US, where the barrels of soda crackers ended up being the site of informal conversation at the country stores.
Thanking the ABC WEDNESDAY TEAM for the opportunity to have fun every week.

How special to have such a wonderful vintage piece of history.
People certainly knew how to do HANDWORK years ago.
Lovely post. Some years ago I wove linen pillow cases for our bed (I didn't spin the linen). Over the years they have grown soft and delightful, and I love using them.
What a wonderful treasure that is...
Didn't even know that they had collar bags in the past - a rare treasure! Came here, because your comment to someone on Abc Wed. made me laugh:)
Fascinating post of history in your family and beautiful collar bag and great shots of it!
Happy Week to you ~ ^_^
Very nice H post.

A fabulous heirloom - you must treasure it.
What a treasure! There were bags and boxes to keep things like collars, gloves, hankies and cuffs clean and white because they were expected to last many years back then not just be tossed away for something new after a few wearings. Made to last meant something.
What a neat treasure! You have amazing shares at your blog. I am so sad today having learned of the passing of Smiling Sally. I am going to continue sharing my blues on Mondays in honor of her. When you have a moment send me an email with your address please. I am phamilybusiness1@aim.com Thank you Ann. Hugs and Blessings, Anne xo

Being organized goes way back for sure. This is a nice bag to have.
