ABC WEDNESDAY - K IS FOR KEEPSAKE

                                                            K IS FOR KEEPSAKE

How many you have kept things from your childhood or have been given gifts that you hang on to?  Merriam Webster defines keepsakes as something kept or given to be kept as a momento. Another source says something that serves to keep the memory alive of a person or event.

The origin of the word dates back to 1790 - keep + sake (as in namesake)

How many of you out there have kept their tassel from your motorboard from your high school or college graduation?  Well I have as well as my husband.

I collected a chrome table years ago and it's reminds me of when my Mom used to roll out homemade cinnamon rolls on it and the smell would permeate the whole house.

It's really odd what some of us keep, I have an old metal pan with lots of dents and breaks that my grandma Jewell had on her porch with flowers growing in it.

I have a billfold that my great-grandfather carried and it still has the old pictures of movie stars from the 1930's in it that he kept.

I have my childhood bicycle from 1957 and it was a beautiful gray with pink stripes and now it's so rusted you can't tell the original color but I can't bear to paint it.

When our children were small we had our baby's shoes bronzed. Is there anybody out there who also did this?

These kind of keepsakes are the most important thing that I own, I don't need  a large fancy home or lots of gems but memories that I can hold and remember.

Do you have keepsakes?

I have a lot of keepsakes. Your baby shoes in bronze are touching. There's something about the little feet and hands of babies that is so sweet. Carver, ABC Wed. Team

I love your keepsakes. I have a music box upstairs that I made in high school. Inside are some of my little keepsakes; a high school pin, a felt bookworm bookmark my mother made when I was a little girl, an Apache tear from my brother, and a lock of hair from one of my babies.

I have all kinds of other stuff too but no bronzed baby shoes. Not sure what I'd do with seven pairs of them!

Its a very evocative word for the objects we keep that have meaning. Little baby shoes and baby hand prints are wonderful things to preserve. Not only that they are endlessly cute.

I have some keepsakes too.
Handprints in clay from my boys, locks of their hair at first hair cut, pottery my Dad made in his Sr. citizen's art class years ago, an oil painting of an abandoned boat my Dad painted years ago too. It hangs in a place of honor in our guest room.
I guess I could go on and on.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

I have a crystal powder bowl that was a going away gift to my mother when she emigrated. I don't particularly like it, but it was hers, so I love having it.

Oh, yes. I have keepsakes. Cute that you have one of each of your children's shoes. I have my baby shoes bronzed. My mom did it for each of us and gave them to us when we married. Love that you have your bike!

Great idea to choose keepsake for your ABC word this week. I also have keepsakes like drawings of my children, things they made at school for Mother's Day, but also things they have given in the past few years. Your shoes are so cute! I wish I had done that of my children.

Lovely "K" post, Ann. My mother kept my first shoes, but I don't know where they ended up (perhaps with my sister). In general, I have become more detached from things as I get older, knowing that when I go, others will have to figure out what to do with them. However, I do have a few things. One of them is a leather elephant that my father got as a gift during the war. It is tattered and I don't really have a place for it, but I love it because he treasured it. I loved hearing about the things that you have kept, and maybe most especially, could visualize the metal pan. Oh, I have and am sitting at, as I type, the table that was our kitchen table. Once the dishes were done, my sister and I sat at it to do our homework. That was the only thing I asked for when my mother died. Funny, how some things bring back conversations, meals, the small things that in the end, were what we were about as a family. They weren't all happy memories, but they feel precious, and I am grateful to you for triggering these flashbacks.
