Gravestones

I find the gravestones of yesterday so fascinating.

These are some my family's graves that I have discovered in my Genealogy.

Pennsylvania Dutch decorating on the top of the stone.  My ancestor was a  member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

I believe this marker is made of metal.

Every shape and size.

Gone but not forgotten. I love the dove.

A simple wooden cross adorns the monument.

My paternal great-grandmother with holding hands.

My great grandfather a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.

There is no end to what we can glean from those who have gone before us. I have such a rich heritage.

I enjoy looking at tombstones but not at night, then they become
decidedly spooky.
Lots of cathedrals in the UK have tombs embedded
in the walls and beneath the floors.
The most important tombs of all have to be of 'Unknown Warriors',
It must be dreadful not to know where ones loved one lies, mainly
after war, so The tomb of The Unknown Warrior earns a certain poignancy.
Interesting post and pictures,
Best wishes,
Di.

I enjoy old tombstones too... always 'hear' the stories in my head ... over here in The Netherlands many churches have them lying on the floor...

First, before I forget, Ann, thanks for coming to The Marmelade Gypsy. your very nice comment on our happy news really made me smile.

Second, I love this post. I've become very involved in seeking my own family history over the past few years and hope to do as you have -- visit cemeteries. I grew up with my mom and I going to the cemeteries where our family members were locally and planting flowers each spring. Now I'm eager to find some of the others.

Thanks again!

I like walking through old cemeteries too. It's sad and sobering but peaceful too. Love seeing the beautiful old headstones. Hugs, Diane

I love walking through the cemeteries too. My hometown cemetery is sinking from the moles or gophers digging and wildlife running everywhere.I love wandering in the backfield where my great grandfather is buried. His grave stone was sinking terribly last time we were there and the groundskeepers do nothing to keep the graves up. Very sad indeed. Here in Denver there is an ancient cemetery that is filled with lots of history and there is an area where they are raising mud bees. It was so fascinating and I am going to check out the website. One mud bee does the pollinating of many honey bees but the attraction is to get all bees to remain safe. I love that you have such a wonderful rich heritage. A gal I worked with traced her dad's family back to Vasco de Gama a 15th century explorer and why he has fascinates me my entire -)life after studying about him still makes me smile. :=)
