New desk

G words this week - Gift, grandpa,  girls, granddaughter and great job.

Junior High students need all they can to succeed in their homework these days.  Our oldest
granddaughter wanted a desk for her room and my hubby ( her grandpa) just had to make one for her.

Being a purist in woodworking it was hard for him to paint it. Everything else he has made has been stained and buffed to a brilliance. His favorites woods being oak, walnut or mahogany. Since this was going to painted he used pine and poplar.

He used fleur-de-lis door knobs and handles, she loves New Orleans.  He also has the availability at the wood shop to do engraving so he added a cross on the drawer.

This year is going to be a good one I know--she's ready.

The recipient is on the left wearing the blue plaid shirt on her waist.

KC Spirit

F is for flood that came fast, with fear and its a fact that lots of federal money was needed to rebuilt the city.

Norman Rockwell painted a picture in honor of the 1951 mega FLOOD that devastated a large part of our city.

Mr. Hall of Hallmark Cards (their headquarters are in Kansas City) was a friend of Mr. Rockwell and commissioned him to do the painting. It is titled "KC Spirit", the original hangs in the Hallmark Visitors Center.

"KC Spirit"

Rockwell's lone figure is sat against our skyline and faces his fate with an upturned chin and rolled up sleeves.

My husbands childhood home was taken in this flood.  He remembers standing on their roof at age 7 and waiting for a family member with a pickup truck to come and rescue him, his Mom and 3 other children.  His Mom salvaged a few items but all of the family photos went down the river.

I found this book for my husband several years ago to have in our library.

While researching some of the facts of the flood I found that Thomas Hart Benton also painted a painting in honor of the flood.
"Flood Disaster"
This painting sold at Southerby's for 1.9 million dollars.

Eric Samuel Timm

Do you enjoy special speakers at church?  We occasionally have one and Eric Samuel Timm (EST) spoke at our church Youth Conference last week and on Sunday.

He is a very talented speaker who is also an artist, orator and author. His live art performance is captivating.

What a spectacular method he has to reach people of any age. His appearance is not your typical evangelist, he dresses casual, has tattoos and a small earring.

He does not ask any certain amount for his artwork, he only asks for a donation. I wanted to buy this one but I don't have a wall big enough.

You can view all of his artwork, books, sermons, clothing on his website.

D is for Debate-Democracy

Democracy in action - what a privilege to live in a country that still stands for freedom to choose our leader.

Debate is defined as a formal discussion on a particular topic in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing arguments are put forward.

Synonyms - discuss, dispute, discourse--what do you expect tonight in the DEBATE!!

Were  you in debate club in school? I was not being too timid at that age. Our Son however won quite a few debates!

Did you ever tell your children- It's NOT up for DEBATE.

Our modern tradition of televised presidential debates began with the John F. Kennedy and VP Richard Nixon on 9-26-1960. Are you old enough to remember watching it on television--I am and I remember it vividly!!

Does this look like your living room at the time?  Does mine.

Tonight who will impress you with STRAIGHT answers--not talk around the issues?

Let's exercise our democracy and watch, take notes, listen!!!!

Annual trip

For "anything goes Pink Saturday" I have a few pics I took last week.  After looking at the pictures there is a lot of  PINK!!

Every school year my hubby and I take our granddaughters school supply shopping. Their Mom always goes along to help supervise. This year Papa was unable to go, he is recuperating from hip surgery.

Just being silly!!
