Trench Art

One of the most interesting subjects to me is military history. Maybe because most of my male ancestors were in the Civil war, World War I, World War II and the Korean War.

I saw a special on television awhile back on "TRENCH ART", it was new to me but maybe you all are familiar with it.

Trench art is the art that was fashioned in the "trenches" during the war from military castoffs  especially artillery shells.

Another thing that I discovered is that the TRENCH COAT originated from the coats that the officers wore in the conflicts.

The famous company " Burberry " was the first to design the trench coat.

Did you know that the raincoat you put on every spring was named from a coat for the trenches? I never realized that!!!

Baby Blue

Last weekend I went to a baby shower for my great-niece and she got the cutest bibs.  The package came with a  little tie got for every month of their first year. You just peel off the backing of the appropriate month and stick it on the bib.

You know you could easily make something like this on your own!! How fun to have the progressive change in the baby for the exact period each month of the year.

Can you tell my children are in their 40's, they didn't have these then!! And I could go on and on about how darling (ha ha) those maternity clothes were back then but I don't have enough time!!!

Sketch

I really would like to be able to sketch a picture, but alas I do not have that talent.  I do have several sketches done by others.

Here is a sketch that my neighbor brought to me last week, she remembered that I love Wizard of Oz and she drew it  for my collection.

I think it adds a nice touch.

I just made a centerpiece for our dining room with lots of pink.

I found the silk flowers at Hobby Lobby and used a vintage pitcher of mine.  My bread bowl is a perfect addition.

I purchased dried baby's breath on line at Sav-on-Crafts.com, it came in a very large bunch and very reasonable.

Just a tip, I cut a small section of bubble wrap to set under the bread bowl for stability and so my table would not be scratched.

I like to re-use and recycle every thing I can.

Route 66

I was watching one of  our local morning news program this morning and they were spotlighting a motel in Carthage, Missouri.

Carthage, Missouri is along the original ROUTE 66 that travels across our country. It encompasses 8 states and is also known as "The Mother Road" and "America's Highway".

The motel is Boots Court  Motel and the famous Clark Gable stayed there. The hotel has been under revitalization and it is restored to the original decor. You can even stay in the very room Clark slept in.

Did you ever watch the television series "Route 66"? The series ran from 1960 - 1964.

A great show--every episode on the road. It was about Buzz and Tod, two young men who seek out adventure instead of being tied down, they do odd jobs to keep them going. They drove a Chevrolet Convertible. It starred George Maharis and Martin Milner.

Before it became Route 66 it was called the "National Old Trails Highway". It was paved in 1926, this would have been the highway my family traveled moving from Missouri to California in the 1940's

At a doctor visit this week, I spotted the KC Royals cow all decked out in his BLUE Royals Helmet.

He sure makes a nice fan doesn't he?

My double cousin is a retired railroad engineer and he has started back at his passion.

 After high school he spent 4 years in the US Navy.  He was married afterward and he and his wife had three children.  He started working for the Katy Railroad and stayed for about 30 years.

Here is the latest paintings he posted.

I love all the vibrant colors.

Quindaro

In our city of Kansas City, Kansas lies a vital part of history during the civil war.  Quindaro was developed right after the Kansas-Nebraska to create a free port for entry into Kansas for the slaves.
The Wyandot Indians were natives to this area and they purchased the land from Delaware.

The Wyandot Indians later disbanded and the Indians were given the option to stay and become United States Citizens.  One of the famous tribe members was Nancy QUINDARO Brown Guthrie.
The town was named after her.

Because QUINDARO was close to the Missouri River it became an ideal location for helping slaves become free!!

Nancy used to hide slaves in the cistern on her property along with pillows, comforter and chair. She kept a washtub over the top to hide the opening to the cistern.

After the war the city was occupied with a number of freed slaves and abolitionists.

In the 1980's our city fought to keep the area from urban renewal and it became part of the Kansas Historical Society.

In 1862 classes were started for former slaves and became the QUINDARO Freedmans School. Later it was changed to Western University.

This area of Kansas City Kansas is rich in history and a major part of our nations freedom.

New Shelf

PINK SATURDAY this week is "anything goes". ALSO

BLUE MONDAY - my shelf has lots of blue to share!!!

I thought I would share what my hubby just put up for me in our sun room. I wanted a shelf for my Wizard of Oz collection.

I went to the Woodworking Guild and picked out a rough board and did not want any finishing on it. I had picked out some iron wall hangers awhile back and thought they would make a great addition.

I had all of this in a corner cabinet but couldn't enjoy them as much!

I really love the rough look.

My granddaughter made the adorable tag.
