J for Joshua Tree


ABC WEDNESDAY
J IS FOR JOSHUA TREE
 
 
 
One of my favorite vacations as a child was traveling to California to visit my maternal Grandfather and his family.
 
My Dad's favorite spot was the Mojave Deset in California.  Every time we passed through we all took turns standing in front of one of the JOSHUA TREES.

The tree is actually a Yucca brevifolia and its genus is the Yucca plant.

The name Joshua Tree started from a group of Mormon settlers who were traveling out west to settle and thought is looked like the biblical Joshua reaching his hands up to pray.

Other inhabitants of the area used parts of the tree for fencing because it was so strong.


The above is a picture of me and my younger sister Deb.

    Thanks for posting a favorite place!
    Have lived over 25 years in California and believe it or not, never visited Joshua Tree. I did see some Joshua trees in Utah, lol! My very favorite place in Calif. is Yosemite and most of my landscape oils and watercolors have been painted there:)

    Those are such interesting 'trees'. I am sure that I have seen them (back when the dinasours were here) as we lived in San Diego early in the '50s.

    Love Joshua trees; always have. The picture of you is charming.

    My only comment about the well-written post is, if the group found the tree so beautiful, why did they cut it down for their own use? Sort of typical "humans rule" behavior... but it doesn't take away from the beauty of the subject!@ Amy
