T is for Ten Gallon Cowboy Hat

Today (a great T word) I'm sharing a picture from Thanksgiving of one of my little great-nephews.   He is sporting a TEN GALLON COWBOY HAT,  well it looks Ten Gallon on him.  He never leaves his house without some kind of hat!!!

The TEN GALLON HAT has several theories about how the term originated.  The first ten gallon hat was sold in  1925 by the Stetson Company. They advertised their Ten Gallon Hats were made of such a tight weave that they were waterproof and that you give  your horse a drink of water--not quite ten gallons, actually about 3 quarts!

The hats today are more decorative and not meant to use to as a watering hole!! The original Ten Gallon Hat was worn by Tom Mix.

We have several cowboys in our family and they can be seen wearing their cowboys hats
on their farms or in their pick-up trucks

  1. Your post was very educational. I never even knew a 10 gallon hat existed? Very cute on your son. I wish I could get my grandson to wear hats. Everytime grammie puts one on his head, he pulls it off☺

  7. I didn't know the origin of the name although I do remember Westerns where the horse drinks from a hat. That is one cute 10 gallon wearer.

  11. Oh, that's an adorable photo! And I love the information you included. We don't see ten-gallon hats here in Vancouver much, though they show up inland...:)

  13. What an adorable photo! Here in OK we're smack-dab in the middle of cowboy hat land, but even so, true 10 gallons are few and far between these days.

  15. What a cutie! Lyle Lovett, of course, wears a ten-gallon Stetson. Inside, there's a tag that reads, "This is Lyle Lovett's hat. Not yours."

He also has a song with Randy Newman called, "He's a Long Tall Texan With a Ten-Gallon Hat," plus one that's very funny: "You Can Have My Girl (But Don't Touch My Hat)! I'm not from Texas (but Texas wants me anyway...) Now I have Lyle Tourette's! Your pic really helped me out today, gave me smile. Peace, Amy
