The TEN GALLON HAT has several theories about how the term originated. The first ten gallon hat was sold in 1925 by the Stetson Company. They advertised their Ten Gallon Hats were made of such a tight weave that they were waterproof and that you give your horse a drink of water--not quite ten gallons, actually about 3 quarts!
The hats today are more decorative and not meant to use to as a watering hole!! The original Ten Gallon Hat was worn by Tom Mix.

We have several cowboys in our family and they can be seen wearing their cowboys hats

Your post was very educational. I never even knew a 10 gallon hat existed? Very cute on your son. I wish I could get my grandson to wear hats. Everytime grammie puts one on his head, he pulls it off☺

I didn't know the origin of the name although I do remember Westerns where the horse drinks from a hat. That is one cute 10 gallon wearer.

What a cutie! Lyle Lovett, of course, wears a ten-gallon Stetson. Inside, there's a tag that reads, "This is Lyle Lovett's hat. Not yours."
