Pink Saturday - PINK Love on my refrigerator

My granddaughters have been busy creating art for the month of February for my refrigerator. They seem to love to draw about love and hearts. Here's the latest artwork.

Next they took an old magnet-cut it to size and made me a love magnet.

I cannot leave this one out--it's not pink but its precious.

I think I will cover this with glass and frame it. She didn't want to make Papa feel bad so she added his name at the end. I call that thoughtful!!!

I'm liking with a LOVELY lady today who makes all of Saturdays a lovely pink.

Vintage Thingie Thursday - My Hummels

Today I'm sharing my collection of Hummels that I purchased when we went to Germany in 1982. We were able to acquire them at a fraction of what the cost was here at that time. I just read on a Hummel site that the Goebel company has discontinuing making them as of 2008.

I realize mine are not exactly vintage but the creator and artist are. Sister Maria Innocenta Hummel began sketching pictures of small children in the 1930's in Germany. Porceline maker Franz Gobel caught a vision to re-create her sketches into porceline and started making the figurines before WWII.

Here is one of Sister Hummels first sketches.

We took a whole day and shopped for Hummels and when we got home my nephew JR, he was three at the time said "Aunt Ann here I have a Hummel for you" and hand me this figurine. He had got it at a little shop in Hieldeberg. Oh I was so honored to take this from him and he sets along side my Hummels in my china cabinet.

Having more mild weather here but we did order a new snow blower to be delivered Monday--think that will keep the snow away?

2011 in Print

I just receieved my 2011 blog book in the mail yesterday. I figured if I'm going to write my hopes, loves and dreams I would put them in writing.

I also printed 2010 and have that book also. It's hard to believe I have written over 350 posts in the last two years.

I chose a black and white photo taken in the 1950's when we were in California for the cover. We are posing on a rock in Montery. This was taken before my youngest sister was born. I have always loved this photo. The back cover is a pic of me all dressed up. I chose a hard cover this year. The book is so well constructed. The company is SharedBook.

Blue Monday

We just rented a movie and l loved it. I don't think it got a lot of press but it won all kinds of awards such as Sundance etc. If you love Robert Duvall it's for you.

It's a true story which makes it so enjoyable.

Pink Christmas Trees for Pink Saturday.

We'll it official I am already planning on how I will decorate for next Christmas!!!!WHOA you say--but just see what I found at Hobby Lobby for 90% off. These will look so beautiful on my white faux fireplace mantel.

They are a lucious soft velvetey fabric.

Been crafting some this week too. I'm making felt flower clips for Valentines day and when the Easter season comes around I will find embellishments for some yellow and pale green ones too.

Vintage Photo in Make-over clock frame

A few years back I purchased a clock for my sunroom. It is a really neat design with birds (my favorite) for that room. The clock worked when I bought it and worked for a few weeks. I purchased it at a flea market and paid about 10.00 for it.

I decided to convert it into a picture frame so I could still use it in there. I chose a vintage picture of my three sisters. It was taken in Oct. 1966 the year I got married and moved to New Mexico.

Blue Monday - January calendar

Well I'm in the swing of January, really don't make resolutions but I've planted some ideas and hopefully will see those come to fruition. My lovely DIL made me a calendar featuring our vacation trip to see them this past summer.

My January page is full of blue and perfect for Blue Monday.

We bought our Daughter these darling KU rain boots and alas they are too big. I'm going to the Post Office to exchange them because I ordered them from an NCAA shop onlne.

Had this song in my head ever since I decided to feature these boots. "Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain".

Rednesday - Christmas Serving Dishes

Doing some after Christmas shopping today and found some real goodies. Target had 70% off christmas decorations so I picked up wrapping paper, ribbons, and ornaments.

I stopped off at the Salvation Army store thinking their Christmas items might be on sale too. I found these great serving dishes for next Christmas. Red and green holly on white ceramic. Both dishes come with silver handles.

I can think lots of goodies to serve in these. Just have to wait until next year!!!!

New Years Eve was spent quietly here, we watched "Because of Winn Dixie" a great family movie. And at midnight rang in the new year with sparking grape juice. Ofcourse we used our wine glasses--my granddaughters think this is pretty cool!! My Mother and sister are still staying with us for awhile so they got to participate too.

My sis made this for me. (How true it is).

The packages are all opened, cousins have returned to Colorado, yummy treats are gone, house is getting kind of cleaned up. But the warmth of the family festivities have lingered on.

Our deck seems so peaceful, just white lights in the still of the night.

We are spending New Years Eve quietly. We are attending church and then our granddaughters are spending the night. We will ring in the New Year with sparking grape juice.
Last year we had to have our toast at 11:00, one of the girls just couldn't stay awake until midnight.

2012 is upon us and we are looking forward to making many more family memories.

First of all this woman really knows how to personalize a package. She decorated the package with all things Wizard of Oz. HOW cute.

Also blue and white check fabric (can ya believe it). A really delicate butterly pick, a sparkly red apple and some lovely brown suade trim. Also four handmade tags!!!

Whooville Christmas - Pink Saturday

MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Our church performed their annual Christmas program last weekend. Our stage became Whoville and all of the members of the choir were instructed to dress "Whovillian". Our junior choir could go all out and dress like Cindy Lou Who and they really did. We had a few "Cat in the Hat's" mixed in.

My sister, daughter and I worked on costumes for my granddaughters. One was a gingerbread cookie and the other Christmas candy. We used red and green felt to make the circular skirts, glued candy and cookie cutouts. We made suspenders and decorated them too.

I wore a Christmas green dress, pink striped leggings and a red sweater with pink polka dots. I wore a big red felt handmade flower in my hair. I bought a red sweater at the goodwill and used fabric paint and painted pink polka dots all over it.

My daughter did a wonderful job on my granddaughters hair it looked fabulous!!

All of the children came in marching down the isles carring large staffs decorated with beautiful decorations and netting.

Our stage was constructed with wooden stairs colored red and green with wooden trees and packages. The grand piano was covered with red velvet.

Our church was decorated beautifully in reds and greens and had a touch of wimsey but our message was "Christs Birth"

Pink Saturday - Annie's Tree

Todays post is a tribute to a very special little girl in our church Annie. If you have read my other blog "Not Accidentally Tuesday" you know about 7 yr old Annie's battle with brain cancer. She passed away in July so this is the first Christmas without her. Her parents are such close friends of ours and they have been the model for any parent who has lost a child. Their faith has carried them through and they wanted this Christmas to be fun. Last weekend they had a Christmas party at their home, they wanted to celebrate the season and celebrate Annie's life.

They put up a tree in Annies honor and decorated it with all things "Annie". My hubby and I and our family find this to be inspiring this season and hopefully so will you. This is the time of the year that we celebrate our Saviors birth. He was born to comfort us and to be with us in times like this!!!

Her tree stands in the hall between her bedroom and her sisters bedroom.

The garland is all of her wrist bands from numerous hospital stays.

The tree is decorated with all of her hair bows.

This pink hat she wore in a wedding in May of this year.

Her tree also is full of things she made in Kindergarten .

This is flat Annie--she carried it with her to all of her hospitals stays. Friends made it so she would know they were thinking of her.
There were about 200 people at the party and everyone laughed, ate lots of goodies and shed some tears too.

Hopefully you will be touched by Annie and maybe say a little prayer for her family this Christmas.

12 Days of Christmas

In lieu of stockings this year, I thought I would do something different for my grandchildren. I've created a 12 days of Christmas to begin today the 14th.

I have all kinds of goodies for them and I think they will enjoying getting a small gift each day.

I used toilet paper rolls, covered them with wrapping paper and glued one end with craft glue. Attached them with a clothes pin, the only problem is some of the gifts are too big for two or three gifts so some of them will be a little note directing them to the location of the gift.

Today is the first day so I'm looking forward to when they get home from school.

Hallmark Artists have finished

The Kansas City Woodworkers have built and the Hallmark Artists have finished painting the rolling bookcases for the victims of the Joplin tornado. Yesterday a convoy traveled to Joplin to deliver the 22 bookcases to an elementary school. My hubby was one of those and was deeply touched by the teachers and principal. Jeweled Christmas Tree - Newest Christmas Creation

This past weekend I created a jewelry christmas tree. My Sister has a couple of them and I have always wanted to make one.

After collecting costume jewelery for the past year and being gifted some, I created this for our Christmas Season.

You can see with the christmas lights off what the jewelery looks like glued on.

I had an 11 x 13 frame and we cut a piece of plywood to fit into the back. I covered the plywood with red felt stapling the edges. Next drilled holes through both layers for the strand of lights. I sketched the outline of the tree on the back and drilled holes along the edges of the tree and holes also inside.

The strand of lights are pushed through the holes in the back-make sure the holes are big enough for the light to fit through, then tape any extra lights you don't use to the back.

I glued green marti gras beads for the outline of the tree and then glued all my jewelry pieces down.

My sisters trees are actually fuller with jewels but I still could add more later if I wanted too, but I really like it the way it turned out.

My Mom is living with us for a few months because of shoulder and jaw fractures, here she is in a pretty pink shirt. My great-nephew came over to spread some "cheer". He is such a delight.

These beautiful flowers were sent from a friend of hers, I'm sorry I don't know the name but they are certainly beautiful.

Pink Saturday - Pink Flamingo and a beach party

Our life group at church participated in the Fall Festival at church this year. Each life group decorated a parking space, provided candy and games for the little trick-or-treaters.

One of the men in our group and his wife are such a fun-loving couple and over over the top in all of our activities. Our group decided on a beach-party scene.

Now that's a man who is comfortable and confident in his own skin!!!!

My hubby in the hawaiian shirt. We had the kids throw beach balls into an inner tube for their trick. We had around 35 booths and a section in the parking lot with a stage show and large slides and trampolines.

Vintage Thingie Thursday

Past week's been a lot hectic. My 85 year old Mom fell and broke her shoulder in numerous places and also cracked her jaw. We went and got her from her hometown (5.5 hours away) and brought up here to Kansas University Hospital to see the ortho and recoop. She decided against surgery and we are hoping the shoulder will heal as is. We have a hospital bed in our sunrrom and she is visited by a homecare nurse 3times a week and physical therapy twice a week.

I wanted to post something this week and I am featuring a vintage Kansas metal plate I hang in my kitchen.

Mom was 85 on the 8th of this month and her brother and sister came to celebrate--a pic of her.

She's enjoying a chocolate peanut butter birthday cupcake!!! So good. Also there's a plate of mini cupcakes in all kinds of wonderful flavors. Some of these days I'm going to be shopping for vintage stuff again and hopefully have some fun things to post.

Blue Monday - Tap Tap Tap on my roof

What's that I hear tapping on my roof. TAP TAP TAP. Are those squirells up there???? They must be VERY BIG ONES. Why do they need this blue tarp to catch their walnut tree haul!!!!!

Oh wait it's not squirells, it's a crew to put on a new roof!!

We have been on a year-long waiting list to get it put on. Their has been numerous wind and rain storms in the past year here in the midwest, let alone all the tornado damage to our neighbors in Joplin, MO and Redmond Kansas.
It just took one day and their already done. Really good workers.

GIVEAWAY FROM THERESA AT 612 RIVERSIDE

Couple of weeks ago I entered the 2nd year "blogiversary giveway" from Theresa @http://612riverside.blogspot.com/.

I found out I won ---hip hip horay and I receieved the package yesterday. Theresa sent a lovely card and said she wanted to personalize the gift. Boy did she---she knitted me a beautiful purple scarf to wear on my red hat days. She knows about my hats that I make and sent me a very pretty pale lavendar flower that I can use for one of my hats or wear on a piece of clothing. She also sent a gorgeous soldered pendant that has a bit of lace inside. How thoughtful is that!!

The gifts came inside this brown bag and a gorgeous altered tag and I love this style.. I'm keeping the tag and displaying it in my sewing room.

Thank you Theresa for being such a thoughtful blogger and really getting to know what I like.

My granddaughters went to "Old Shawnee Town" here in Kansas where it's all decked out and the businesses around have a space to hand out candy.

Gorgeous Afghans made from the heart

NEW LIVING TRANSLATION

Since Breast Cancer Awareness is this month, I want to feature some afghans that a dear friend of mine makes for people who are suffering from cancer.

Karen, who attends my church and my life group brought one of her afgans to show our group and I was taken back by how large and cozy and thick they are. She uses 12 skeins to make these. Here are some of the ones she has made.

Karen was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Oct. of 05 and had a mastectomy and reconstruction in Dec of 05. She started chemo the end of Jan 06. Karen felt compelled to give back and started volunteering at Cancer Centers in Winston Salem, NC. She was able to guide three people through their treaments by listening to them, answering questions and lending them her hats and scarves. In June of 2011 found out about Cancer Action and stopped in and found out what they were about and what there needs were. She found out they really needed afghans and started making them as well as volunteering her time in their office. To date she has made 11 afghans and will continue to make as many as they need. God has given her the ability to do this and hopes each and every person that receives one knows that she made it just for them with love. Karen spends her own money, does not recieve any funds from anywhere to give these to deserving individuals.

Cancer is a terrible disease and we hope that we can get rid of it but until then she will keep giving of her time and God given talent to help others. Karen is 6 years cancer free and by the Grace of God will stay that way.

Her afghans are 55" x 60" so they are comfy for men as well as women.

I visited with Karen yesterday and she told me that one of her afghans that she made for a man, left it to his grandson who spent many hours snuggling with him in his favorite spot.

THE FEDORA

A fedora is a men's felt hat. It is typically creased lengthwise down the crown and pinched in the front on both sides, though the creasing does not define the hat. Fedoras can also be creased with teardrop crowns, diamond crowns, center dents, and others, and the positioning of pinches can vary if they are found at all. Early on, fedoras were sold open crown, meaning they were uncreased, with the owner creating his/her own crease manually. By the 1950s, hat makers started blocking the various creases into the hats when they were made. This is now the standard. The brim goes all the way around the crown and can be left raw edge, finished with a sewn overwelt or underwelt, bound with grosgrain ribbon, or finished with a self-felted cavanagh edge. Traditionally, fedoras have grosgrain hat bands. A trilby hat is similar to a fedora, but typically has a narrower brim, and the back of the brim is distinctively more sharply upturned as a result.

The term fedora was in use as early as 1891. Originally a women's fashion into the 20th century, the fedora came into use in about 1919 as a men's middle-class clothing accessory. Its popularity soared, and eventually it eclipsed the similar-looking Homburg by the 1920s. Fedoras can be found in nearly any color imaginable, but black, grey, tan, and brown are the most popular.

I've always loved hats and it takes a lot of self confidence to wear one today. I've been in the "Red Hat Society" for about 8 years and always wear hats to those events, but everyone is wearing one. I've decided to start wearing hats more often to all kinds of events and just hanging around.

Fedora's are all the rage in the stores and I see them on many celebs and in the fashion magazines.

I found a wonderful pattern and have made a few now. Here's mine:

I spotted a beautiful blue Oldsmobile convertible last week at the doctors office. Had to have a picture.

Pristine white leather interior. Looks like a late 60's. How old were you? I was in my early 20's and would loved to have had this one.

Such a delightful shot of my granddaughters playing with the Ripstick this summer.

Last week while going to my hair appointment, I took pictures of all the halloween decorations in the area. The businesses in this small area create a scarecrow to represent their business.

My hair stylist shop created this lovely creature:

They took 2nd Place in the contest.

Blue Monday - Fun at the farm

This past Friday we made a trip to my hubbys brother and sister in laws farm. Our granddaughters were staying with us so we made it a really fun day.

Uncle K took the girls on a ride in the bucket of his tractor.

At first Olivia wasn't sure "Papa, I don't know about this".

But she ended up having so much fun. They took two rides and even rode down to one of Uncles ponds.

We took a couple of loaves of bread to feed the catfish and fatten them up!!

Once they threw a few pieces of bread, catfish came from everywhere.

We also lit a fire and roasted marshmellows.

Lots of family fun!!

We also took a ride over to Jamesport Mo and had a great lunch.

Such a fun day for all.

It's officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I'm seeing pink food everywhere!

The darling little mini cupcakes "Pink Hope Vanilla". Such cute pink and white swirls.

In Jamesport, Mo. yesterday we visited an amish store--love this place. This great sign with handmade cake goodies.

I'm definately going to be using these paper liners this month.

I just think it's fantastic that everywhere you turn this month you see that PINK RIBBON. It honors all that are suffering or have suffered in the past.

Today was my regular appt for haircut and I had seen these items in the shop before but never thought of blogging about them.

A while back my hair stylist found a vintage hair-curler from probably the 1920's. She HAD to have it.

Can you imagine having this contraption attached to your locks??? What if there was a power surge!!!

Also on her wall hung this photo of a hairdresser in that era.

Sorry about the glare of the windows. Loved picking out the items in the picture-telephone-hat on hat rack, I can't tell what she's using in her hair.

Thought you might get a kick out this bygone method.

Red Wednesday - Country theme bridal shower

Last week my Sister Lori, her sister-in-law and I gave a bridal shower for Lori's son our nephew and his fiancee. He is a cowboy at heart and loves country music.

We decided to go with country red, here are pictures from the shower.

Centerpieces for the tables. Kansas wheat in mason jars of sand. Also mason jars of peanuts and sunflower seeds for snacking and a jar with a candle. Along side the jars was a horseshoe.

We sat up a "photo area" for all the individaul couples or familes to have their picture taken to go in the ablum for the couple.

We had gingham bags filled with the couple's favorite candy for a party favor.

We also hung mason jars from the tree--was pretty when the sun went down.

I added a bit of red to my fall wreath I featured last Thursday. I added vintage children's blocks spelling FALL. Notice 3 of them are red.

As I was attending a luncheon this summer I was doing a little window shopping in their gift area. I ran across this book.

Been waiting for a few months to post our new deck. The white trim was completed today.

We will be adding a brick patio at the bottom with a fountain and flowers along the back of the home.
Our deck is composite and will only need power washing--no more staining and no splinters.

Autum should be nice sitting out here. We will be having a fire pit too for yummy marshmellows.

This Saturday we participated in our Kansas City Woodworks Guild Open House. Our bookcases for Joplin Elementary Schools was displayed. This is the first of 49 bookcases we are building for the schools. Hallmark Cards of KC is one of the contributors and some other anonymous givers of wood and hardware for this fantastic project.

My husband along with others will be building the remaining 49 in the next few weeks.

The bookcase is on casters and hinged to open up like a book.

This is a VERY REWARDING project, would love to see the little faces when they first see their new bookcases.

HEROS - Special 9-11 Service at church

This weekend our church in all 4 services honored the hero's of 9-11, including our own military, firefighters, EMS, policeman- active and retired.

Our choir all dressed in white and a stage size American Flag adorned the stage. I"m standing right behind the guitarist.

Taps played by an active policeman.

All of the hero's lined the front of the auditorium.

My hubby (second from left-short blue shirt) is a veteran of the US Air Force and a retired Fireman/Paramedic of 33 years.

Our pastor made a point to remind us all that Jesus sacrificed most of all for us and he is our #1 HERO.

Hoping that your services today highlighted our heros on 9-11 and today.

As I myself am reflecting on the events that occurred on 9-11-01, I ran across this picture of the reflecting pool in 2009. The pink roses are fitting for Pink Saturday.

Take some time out this weekend and pray for protection for our wonderful country and for the thousands of families who were affected by this tragedy.

There is controversy around the landmark 10th anniversary on Sunday. Many people are being left out and prayer has been elimated from the ceremony. Keep all those involved in your prayers.

My next door neighbor was having a garage sale last weekend. Ofcourse I went over to take a peek. This wagon had all kinds of blankets on top but I could not see a price tag on it. I asked if it were for sale and she said "do you want it?", I asked how much it was and she said it dosen 't matter just take it. Well later found out there was a $10.00 price tag on it. I would have paid that for it for sure.

I have the sweetest neighbor--on both sides of my home.

This Radio Flyer wagon has the original paint and wheels. I love it.

It will look so good with fall mums and christmas decorations!!

Weekend thrift find, keeping with my blue splatter in my kitchen I found this great ceramic bowl.

It has a really pretty waffle edging and made really well. Paid $6.00 and it really looks good in the kitchen.

Sitting on our deck we see our neighbors Rose of Sharon. It starts blooming in June and is still going strong. Our VERY hot and dry summer has not deterred this from blooming.

We purchased this Purple martin house several years ago.

Hello all you collectors!! Suzanne always has great things to look at.

In the mountains of Colorado, my DIL was doing a bid to do some painting on a gorgeous home. The kitchen is so wonderful, along the top of all the cabinets she had many pieces of blue enamelware.

I had one piece, this coffee pot.

I thought I would try and do the same so I have begun looking for the blue and white speckled pieces. I found this pan last week.

After I get the cabinets done in white, I think a collection would look great.

Last week on vacation I stopped at a junk store and found these adorable garden gnomes. They are a hard plastic, there are no markings on them. From looking on ebay, it looks like they were made in the 1950's.

Wickipedia tells me that gnomes started in Germany and they are men with beards, red hats and usually smoke a pipe. The first ones were made of plaster and some still are.

I haven't decided where to put them in my gardens yet.

It was 108 degrees today so I didn't feel like trying them in different spots.

We took some really cool pictures over the 4th of July. My grands were lighting smoke bombs with Uncle B and they weren't doing very well. The threw some in the fire in the firepit and made beautiful colors.

It's been mighty hot here in Kansas over the last week, I took this picture about 7:30 PM yes PM---.

Thats 106 degrees.

Its suppose to cool down some the rest of the week--we're staying inside quite a bit.

Had lunch with a few good friends today, I took some snapshots of the architecture of the Kansas City Plaza. Most of the buildings are a beautiful light soft pink. We ate at the Cheescake Factory and I took a few shots of the ceiling and one of the columns.

Sending pink kisses to all of my Pink Saturday friends today!!!!!

Just a little history on the X's used for kisses. During Medeival ages, a cross was drawn on documents or letters to mean sincerity and honesty. A KISS was then placed on the upon thre cross by the signer to display their sworn oath. It has gradually become a symbol for love and people still draw in on their cards and letters.

I have a few different pinks for today.

First my 9 yr. old grand made a pillow for Papaw for him to use in his easy chair. She used the sewing machine and stuffed the pillow with pillow foam. Very summery and PINK.

Our girls enjoying the beautiful 70 degree weather this past week (very unseasonal).

We are currently working on our new deck and the mild weather has been so wonderful to work in.

I love the way the stem grows on this Clome plant don't you?

Having fun this summer (just a few more days until it's officially summer). Today my granddaughters and daughter and I had some fun going to a movie.

We took the girls to see "Judy Moody, And The Not Bummer Summer". SO CUTE. I bought my grands the book series this last year and they love Judy--what a character she is.

Judy is a 3rd grader and our girls around the same age. Judy wears high top tennis shoes and so do we!

If you want a really cute movie for your kids or grandkids you must go see it.

We are doing major work to our back yard. We are putting on an L-shape deck across the back of the house--going from the sunroom. We are using Trex-lumber---I'm so excited.

So part of the gardens are not getting the attention they deserve this spring. My hubby has been laying pipe to all of my gardens and putting in faucets in each garden so I don't have to drag a hose around the yard.

My tomatoes however are doing good this year, I have three kinds planted.

We don't usually get tomatoes here in Kansas until about Aug. 15th. I can hardly wait so I can make BLT's.

I purchased this metal plant stand at a garage sale last week for $5.00. Holds mint, sweet basil and some marigolds.

The foundation posts are showing for the new deck. After it is on, I will be doing major landscaping.

We were sitting outside yesterday drinking coffee and I was looking at the gardens in my yard. In one spot I have cannas and chives and a redwood bush growing in one area. In the middle of it I have a white CHURCH bird house. This song came to my mind and I've been humming it for two days:

Song History

William Pitts was on his way to visit his bride-to-be in Fredericksburg, Iowa. The stagecoach in which he rode stopped at Bradford, 14 miles west of Fredricksburg. There he strolled about enjoying the trees, the lush green growth and the gentle rolling hills as he anticipated the joy of seeing his beloved.

Of particular beauty was a wooded area in the valley formed by the Cedar River. Pitts envisioned a church building there and could not seem to ease the vision from his mind. Days later, when he returned home, he wrote a poem about the imagined church and set it to music in 1857.

Pitts returned to Bradford Academy to teach music seven years later. To his surprise he discovered a small church building being erected on the very spot where he had imagined a church years before. It was painted brown because that was the color of the cheapest paint to be had.

Pitts located the copy of his almost forgotten song, and, at the dedication of the new church building, his singing class from the academy sang it for the first time.

In 1865, Pitts sold the song to a Chicago music publisher for $25. He used the money to enroll in Rush Medical College, but his song was forgotten. After graduation in 1868, Pitts returned to Fredericksburg where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 1906.

By the turn of the century, the village of Bradford had almost ceased to exist. It had been bypassed by the railroad that went through Nashua, two miles to the west. Weeds grew in the churchyard, and the dilapidated building was closed.

A few years later the congregation experienced revival, the church was opened and re-painted its original color. Traveling musicians discovered Pitts's song, and its popularity spread through the country.

The Little Brown Church in the Vale has become a famous tourist attraction in Iowa, and the song describing its beauty is still sung. Standing in a picturesque rural setting among pine trees, the church is a favored place for weddings.

Each year several hundred couples, young and old, are married there. Following the ceremony, each bride and groom together pull the rope that rings the church bell.

Many artists have recorded it, Alabama, Dolly Parton, Carter Family, Kitty Wells, Charley Pride and Loretta Lynn to name a few.

Even though I live in the city, I'm a country girl at heart.

One of my favorite subjects are flowers so that what Im' featuring today.

The stamps that were featured in 1981 are the Rose, Camellia, Dahlia and Lily.

These four stamps featured flowers which add beauty and brightness to America's gardens. The block was designed by Lowell Nesbitt of New York City.

The Rose is the worlds most popular garden flower and is the state flower of New York.

Gardening offers endless possibilites for self-expression and creativity. Since gardens are alive they are constantly changing and responsive to care. We as gardeners are taught patience and reverence for nature. In North America alone there are over 30,000 species of blossoming plants.

I have roses and lillies growing in my gardens.

After a fantastic 3rd birthday party last Saturday, here we are carrying on a rich pink saturday tradition.

Some of my perininals have bloomed this weekend:

A new Clome I planted a few weeks ago. I really love how delicate this plant is, beautiful foliage and pretty pink.

Lillium and a lovely pink plant stake.

Off to market to buy Miracle Grow plant food (the kind that attaches to your garden hose) LOVE IT.

Outdoor Wednesday - New Scarecrow

I have a strawberry patch and I'm getting red strawberries. EXCEPT for the ones the birds want to take bites out of. I did some reading on the internet on ways to deter these little feathery critters and found a few suggestions.

My grandgirls and I made a scarecrow this weekend.

He's standing in the middle of the strawberry patch.

My artists:

They put a great big ole smile on him , I don't know how scarry he is!!!

I used one of those garden oil lamps you can buy at Big Lots for 2.00 and had hubby nail a board across the back to make his arms. I took an old pillow case and stuffed his head with plastic bags. Put a hat on I already had with built- in green hair. Used a flannel shirt.

I also read that birds dislike snakes so I purchased 4 plastic snakes at Cracker Barrel and set them on all corners of the garden.

Hope this really works. Even if it dosen't he looks pretty cute in the OZ yard, along with the tinman.

Sunday Stamps # 21 - People honored by a stamp

Today I'm featuring a stamp of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Roosevelt was the only man to ever be elected to the Presidency four times. Less than 3 months into his forth term he suddenly died.

No other president has had a greater impact of the American life. His bold programs helped pull the nation out of the Great Depression. I spoke to my Mother this morning, she would have been 17 in 1944 and remembers the long bread lines that her family stood in and how her Dad was out of work and no jobs were to be had.

He also lead America to victory over the axis powers in World War II. My Dad was in the Army/Airforce in 1945 and was a radio tower operator.

One of Roosevelt's greatest accomplishments and most lasting legacies is far removed from politics. A polio victim himself, he brought the nation's attention to the disease and founded the March of Dimes in 1938.

This stamp was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this birth.

Since this is Memorial Day Observance, I thought I would post a Veterans Administration stamp.

The Veterans Administration was created on July 21, 1930, by consolidating several smaller agencies created after the Revolutionary War. At it's 50th anniversary the VA's programs covered 30 million living veterans. At the same time, the VA still provided support for windows and children of the civil war.

The GI Bill was intituted in June 1944. My husband served during the Viet Nam era and used the G.I. Bill to help achieve his associates and bachelor's degrees!!!

My contribution for Pink Saturday this week is a vintage pink and white vase I purchased at a garage sale last week for $2.00.

It has a pretty scallloped white on the back. The owner said it belonged to her Mom, I wouldn't have sold it but it was nice for me.

Have you been hittin those garage sales?? We've been having quite a few around here. AND and new hugh antique mall really close.

I bought these two items this week for use in outside gardening.

An old commercial dust pan. I attached to the house and will plant annuals.

A couple of hay picks I plan on using as plant hangers.

I know they are sharp, I will hang them high enough so no one runs into them!!!

I'm really enjoying this Spring, the weather has been in the 70's in the mornings, so I have been able to be out planting, weeding and mowing for the last couple of weeks.

I bought a few new tintage tins and have planted some annuals in a gorgeous old red and white Sexton Spice tin.

My pinks in three shades.

My old fashioned roses are so brillant this year and fragrant.

I take several strolls a day on this side of the house taking in the fragrance and have cut some for vases.

Our subject today is Folk Culture or handcrafts. My family has a long Indian Heritage, we have Cherokee, and Creek Indian ancestors for certain. Since this prevails in our family I would like to share some Folk Indian Masks.

The Indian Clans placed great emphasis on on family and clan relationships, and traced each clan 's ancestry to a mythical animal.

The spirit masks were sacred and jealously guarded possessions. Fashioned of steamed and bent wood , the intricately carved masks often had moving parts.

They used black paint derived from charcoal or soft lignite coal and red was made from iron ores. The blues were from copper sulphide.

The Tlingit mask represents an animal spirit. The Bella Coola mask personifies a whistling spirit.

What a proud people the Indian's were and should occupy a very honored place in our life today.

My hot pink peonies bloomed this week. I'm so EXCITED, they are doing better this spring than in years before. Lot of buds to bloom.

I have a budding photographer who just took this picture last week. My 7 year old granddaughter loves birds as much as we do. She caught these baby birds waiting for mama to bring dinner!!!

My roses have bloomed and hubby brought these in yesterday and put them in a vase to enjoy inside.

Today I'm sharing the most precious picture of my great-niece Maddison. Her grandma-my sis took this picture last week, her little brothers have ones like this and they are all made into 8 x 10's.

My sister e-mailed this to me, hopefully you can enlarge to see it pic better. Maddie has a blue bow on her fishing hat along with the blue coveralls.

I tried to enlarge, but it distorts the photo.

Alas, looked for Mothers Day stamps or any with just a mother and couldn't find any.

I do really like this stamp which highlights the relationship between Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan.

Anne through her fingertips used words to bring the sights and sounds of the world to her isolated pupil.
They walked through the Alabama countryside, went to Church--Anne became a mother figure, teacher to Helen.

This stamp honors their lifelong friendship, courage and love.

This stamp was first issued on the centennial of Helen Keller's birth.

Back to Blue Monday--glad to be able to share again.

Few weeks back my Mom was here at Easter and this picture was taken in our church foyer. Her friend of 50 + years was there too. These ladies have both spent their entire lives living for the Lord and have raised all their children to do the same. What wonderful examples they are for the current generation.

My Mom is in the dark blue.

This was taken between services, we had a big blow up jumpie things for the little ones.

Today will be spent outside doing some yardwork. It going to be in the 80's here.
